Better Access

Medicare Better Access Referral requirements (taken from ASKMBS Advisory Service: Allied health services – Part B Mental health treatment) – see https://www.health.gov.au/resources/publications/better-access-fact-sheet-professionals?language=en

Dated letter/referral addressed to Dr Aimee Velnoweth, Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Neuropsychologist.

The referral for an ‘initial’ course of therapy in writing (signed and dated by the referring practitioner) including:

  • The patient’s name, date of birth and address;

  • The patient’s symptoms or diagnosis (note recognised list of conditions);

  • A list of any current medications;

  • The number of sessions the patient is being referred for (the ‘course of treatment’);

  • A statement about whether the patient has an MHTP, or a psychiatrist assessment and management plan; and 

  • A statement about whether the referral can be used for group therapy or individual therapy.

GP - Please include separate but accompanying Mental Health Care Plan.

A medical review is required after 5-6 sessions. Re-referral is required to access ‘subsequent’ or more than 6 sessions in a calendar year (up to 10 sessions in calendar year).

People can bring hard copy of the referral & MHCP to their first appointment, or these can be emailed to info@mindandmatterpsych.com.au, or faxed 08 6323 3331.

Please note we do not provide eating disorders services or pregnancy support counselling. We are not a bulk-billing practice.

Department of Veterans Affairs

Clinical Psychology: GP or Psychiatrist to refer for treatment (up to 12 sessions per ‘treatment cycle’). Re-referral after each cycle of treatment as required.

Neuropsychological Assessment: Referral required from GP, MO or Psychiatrist. Clinical Neuropsychologists are then required to submit to DVA and obtain ‘prior financial authorisation’ for an assessment in most circumstances.

Garrison Health Services/Serving Defence Members

Please complete referral paperwork and if required, submit a named referral for processing by Bupa to ensure the member is seen by Dr Velnoweth.

Neuropsychological Assessment

GP and all relevant medical specialties can refer. Please refer for assessment and if relevant, please complete screening blood tests to identify reversible causes of cognitive impairment and neuroimaging.
